Fenway Park 100th birthday fly over

An F-16 fighter jet and a WWII era P-51 Mustang flew over for Fenway Parks 100th birthday party on April 20, 2012, prior to the Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees game. Over 200 former Red Sox players gather on the field and took part in the pregame ceremonies. The teams wore throwback uniforms from their 1912 match up. No player had a name or number on their jersey.

Red Sox to host Yankees for the final time during the regular season

By Brian Rabuffetti

The Boston Red Sox took two out of three games against the Oakland Athletics over the weekend. They played all three games in just two days at Fenway Park. On Friday night the Red Sox lost to the A’s, but Boston bounced back and swept the day-night doubleheader on a raining Saturday. The second game was originally scheduled for Sunday, but was moved up a day due to Hurricane Irene’s impending arrival. The hurricane gave the Red Sox an unusual two-day break with the scheduled day off on Monday.

The New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night and headed north for their final regular-season series at Fenway Park. Boston leads the AL East Division by 1.5 games over the Yankees, who have a 7.5 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the Wild Card race. The Red Sox, who have won 10 of 12 games in season series with New York, will host them for the third time this year.

David Ortiz recently recovered from heel bursitis and is swinging a hot bat for the Red Sox. Ortiz is batting .550 with three home runs, seven RBI and 1.771 OPS in five games played last week. Fellow All-Star Adrian Gonzalez has been producing on a similar level and earned the American League Player of the Week Award. Last week Gonzalez went 11-for-28 and powered Boston to a series win in Texas with five home runs at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Papelbon suspended, but records milestone while on appeal

By Brian Rabuffetti

Boston Red Sox pitcher Jonathan Papelbon had an interesting day in New York City. To start the day, he was disciplined with a three-game suspension and fined an undisclosed amount for Saturday’s incident with home plate umpire Tony Randazzo. He appealed the decision, citing Randazzo was as much to blame as he was. Papelbon concluded the day with a milestone save against the New York Yankees, helping the Red Sox to a 6-4 win and a share of first place in the AL East.

In the ninth inning of the Red Sox extra-inning win over the Oakland Athletics on June 4, the Red Sox closer was tossed by Randazzo for arguing balls and strikes. Earlier in the inning, catcher Jason Varitek was ejected for the same reason. Papelbon’s displeasure appeared to be with the inconsistency of Randazzo on borderline pitches.

Papelbon and Randazzo exchanged words, before Papelbon ran up to the umpire and was immediately ejected. Before manager Terry Francona and his teammates could drag him away, Papelbon slightly bumped the chest of Randazzo.

Red Sox Nation: Forget about the Yankees

By Brian Rabuffetti

With thousands of other Boston Red Sox fans, I left Fenway Park on Thursday, May 19, after a great game. Carl Crawford had just hit his third walk-off hit of the season to lift the Red Sox to a win over the Detroit Tigers and stretch their winning streak to six games.

I began walking to Jerry Remy’s Sports Bar & Grill to watch the conclusion of the Boston Bruins win over the Tampa Bay Lightning in the third game of the NHL Eastern Conference Finals. The crowd was jubilant. I expected to hear pro Red Sox or Bruins chants. I thought I might even hear some anti Lightning or Tigers chants, but there was just one phrase repeating above all others. Roaring up and down Lansdowne Street, the crowd screamed the derogatory chant about the New York Yankees that we all know so well.
