Fenway Park turns 100 years old, recapping the festivities

Over 200 former Red Sox players take the field for Fenway Park's 100th anniversary.

At Fenway Park near The Fens, the Boston Red Sox faced the New York Yankees at 3:05 p.m on April 20, just as they did 100 years ago. The teams wore throwback uniforms from their April 20, 1912 match up. No player had a name or number on their jersey.

Over 200 former Red Sox players gathered on the field and took part in the pregame ceremonies. Each player’s name was displayed on the scoreboard as they walked out of the center field fence. Pedro Martinez, Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, Nomar Garciaparra, Bill Buckner, Dwight Evans, Johnny Pesky, Tim Wakefield and Jason Varitek received the loudest applause, but the crowed roared for former manager Terry Francona above all others. Francona, who previously stated he did not want to be apart of the event, decided to come for the fans and left immediately after the ceremony.

Red Sox Greats Retire and the Red Sox Are Better Off

Boston Red Sox stars Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield are now retired. They were with the team longer than any other player on the current roster. All of us in Red Sox Nation will miss the fan favorites. They accomplished amazing things for Boston, but those feats are gone to history books and DVDs. The aging duo can no longer perform as we remember and therefore it’s good to see them move on.

Wakefield records 200th career win, downing the Blue Jays

By Brian Rabuffetti

Tim Wakefield recorded his 200th career win on Tuesday night. It was his 186th as a member of the Boston Red Sox. After going 0-3 with five no-decisions over his last eight starts, Wakefield earned the milestone win in the Red Sox victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, 18-6. The knuckleballer allowed five runs and six hits over six innings to pick up the win.

Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia led an offensive attack for Boston with four hits each and a combined eight RBI and eight runs scored. Ellsbury hit a two-run double in the second inning and solo home run in the fourth. Pedroia immediately followed Ellsbury’s homer with one of his own to give the Red Sox a 6-5 advantage in the fourth. Pedroia added a three-run shot in the sixth inning and Jarrod Saltalamacchia lined a three-run double in the eighth for Boston, which scored a season-high 18 runs to snap a five-game losing streak.

Wakefield began his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992. On July 31, 1992 Barry Bonds drove in two runs to help Wakefield claim his first win. The Pirates beat St. Louis, 3-2, at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. Over the course of two seasons, he won 14 games, before being sent to the minors and ultimately released by the Pirates.

Ellsbury gives Red Sox back-to-back walk-off wins

By Brian Rabuffetti

Jacoby Ellsbury topped his walk-off single on Tuesday night by belting a game-winning home run to give the Boston Red Sox a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night at Fenway Park.

Ellsbury, who recorded his first career walk-off hit on Tuesday, came up with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the ninth inning of a tie game. Ellsbury took the first pitch for a strike and drove the second pitch into the center field bleachers.

Ellsbury’s 18th home run of the season tied him with Adrian Gonzalez for second most on the Red Sox, trailing only David Ortiz’s 20. It also marked Ellsbury’s seventh home run and 20th run scored since the All-Star Break. He leads the American League in both statistics over that time.

Dice-K expected to undergo season-ending surgery

By Brian Rabuffetti

According to multiple sources, including ESPN and Boston.com, Daisuke Matsuzaka is expected to have ligament reconstruction surgery. The Tommy John procedure will end Matsuzaka’s season and he may not return until some time during the 2012 season.

Matsuzaka went home to Japan to be with family members before meeting with Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Dr. Yocum confirmed the Red Sox doctor’s diagnosis of a torn ulnar collateral ligament in the right elbow.

Matsuzaka, who has been on the disabled list since May 18, could attempt a rehabilitation program, but if it failed and the surgery was then needed, valuable recovery time would have been wasted.
