Pedroia ‘The Laser Show’ is above Cano

This weekend the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees meet once again to renew their longstanding rivalry. During these battles for dominance, like most Red Sox fans, I can’t help comparing my hometown team to those guys from Bronx, N.Y. I am sure the Yankees fans do the same.
Lately I have been thinking about the second basemen. Would you rather have Robinson Cano or Dustin Pedroia? Although New York may have an advantage over Boston at some positions, this is not one of them.
Cano broke in with the Yankees and finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2005. He was selected to his first All-Star game and improved in almost every statistical category in 2006. Cano’s next two seasons were good, but nothing spectacular compared to the start of his career.
Pedroia played his first full MLB season in 2007. He topped Cano’s rookie campaign and won the AL Rookie of the Year Award. Pedroia improved in his sophomore season and was rewarded with his first of three consecutive All-Star game selections. He won a Silver Slugger Award and was named the 2008 AL MVP.
In 2009, Pedroia had an All-Star season, while Cano was returning to his rookie form. Last season was Cano’s year to become a New York star. He was selected to his second All-Star team, won his first Silver Slugger Award and finished third in the 2010 AL MVP voting.

Cano tops Gonzalez in home run derby, as AL wins contest

By Brian Rabuffetti

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz won the 2010 State Farm Home Run Derby and was named the captain of the 2011 team. MLB introduced the captain concept for the first time this year and gave each league’s captain the honor of picking three other players to join the contest. Ortiz picked his teammates well. The American League won the battle with 76 home runs compared to 19 by the National League team, which was captained by Prince Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Adrian Gonzalez was the first batter of the contest. In round one he hit nine balls over the walls of Chase Field. His second home run went into the pool area and his eighth was his longest shot of the opening round, going 447 feet to the last row of the first-deck seating area in right field.
