Red Sox Nation reaction: It’s April, so don’t
black and white porch TV. Not long after, I took my first trip to Fenway
Park and I was awed by the sights and sounds. Like generations before
me, I was captured by the Red Sox. I know the pain that can come from a
devastating Red Sox loss, but my experience as a fan tells me that this
is not one of those times. Don’t overreact in April.
year” for the Red Sox, but I never really thought it could happen. 2004
changed all that. Going into the 2007 playoffs, I didn’t hope they
would win. I believed and knew they would win the World Series. I
believe in the 2011 team.

best days to be in Boston and I want to enjoy it.
similar fate as the 1996 Red Sox, who started off 0-5 and finished
third. Of course it’s possible, but I don’t see it as likely.
Jacoby Ellsbury returns with hot spring and start to the regular season
Jacoby
Ellsbury broke into the majors in a big way during the 2007 playoff run and
World Series win. In 2008 he finished third in rookie of the year voting and he
followed that year by improving in every statistical category in the 2009
season.
In 2010, things went sharply down hill for Ellsbury. He suffered broken ribs
after colliding with Adrian Beltre and didn’t play much after that incident.
His recovery was slow and tensions him and his agent had with the team and
doctors came to light. Whatever the relationship between the two sides, it
looks like that is in the past for now.
At the start of spring games, Ellsbury was given the opportunity to play
center field again this season. This move back to center should help him relax
and give him a boost of confidence.
Manager Terry Francona wants to have Ellsbury return to leading off the
batting order, but some question if Ellsbury is ready for it. Pressure is on
him since he took a beating in the press for his apparent lack of desire to
return from the injury last year. Going into the spring, I wondered if he
needed time to get healthy, get his timing back and play ball without worrying
about the fans and media.
This spring, Ellsbury was the offensive standout for the Red
Sox. He led them in batting with a .355 average and hit three home runs. He
recorded a .950 OPS and stole two bases. For now, he has convinced doubters and
more importantly he convinced Francona. Ellsbury’s performance earned him the
leadoff role to start the regular season.
Ellsbury took his hot spring into the regular season,
notching three hits, including a home run, scoring three times and stealing a
base in the first series of the year.
All early indications point towards Ellsbury returning to
his rookie form and the stolen base competition he will have with Carl Crawford
will be a fun and flashy dimension seldom seen from the Red Sox.

Red Sox 2011 preview
General Manager Theo Epstein doesn’t talk about win numbers or
expectations for the team. The Red Sox maintain expectations to avoid
disappointments, but secretly hopes must be high this year. They are a
legitimate contender to win 100 games in the toughest division in
baseball and go on to the World Series.
Catcher Victor Martinez
and third baseman Adrian Beltre are the biggest departures from the 2010
team, but Epstein added left fielder Carl Crawford and first baseman
Adrian Gonzalez. Jarrod Saltalamacchia will take over the starting
catcher duties and outfielder Mike Cameron moves to the bench.
All
five starting pitchers are returning as well as reliever/starter Tim
Wakefield. If healthy the starting rotation could be one of the best in
baseball. More on the starting pitchers, click here. The bullpen was revamped with additions of Bobby Jenks and Dan Wheeler. More on the bullpen, click here. The pitchers will need to become acquainted with the new pitching coach, Curt Young, and the new catcher.
The two key additions:
1)
Crawford earned his first Louisville Silver Slugger Award in 2010. He
set career highs for home runs, RBI and OPS. Crawford finished seventh
in the MVP voting. Since the departure of Manny Ramirez, the Red Sox
left field position has been in flux. Crawford now has chance to
solidify the position and add his name to the list of great left
fielders. More on Crawford, click here.
2)
Red Sox fans followed Gonzalez closely and many expected the trade to
be just a matter of time. In December they got him. The three-time NL
All-Star should get a boost in his production numbers by playing in
Fenway Park. More on Gonzalez, click here. With his addition, Kevin
Youkilis will move to his natural position of third base.
My projected starting lineup and stat predictions:
CF: Jacoby Ellsbury 60 stolen bases, 100 runs
LF: Carl Crawford 43 stolen bases, 15 triples
2B: Dustin Pedroia 20 home runs, .315 AVG
3B: Kevin Youkilis 155 hits, 100 RBI
1B: Adrian Gonzalez 40 home runs, 125 RBI
DH: David Ortiz 80 BB, .510 SLG
RF: J.D. Drew 880 OPS, 130 hits
SS: Marco Scutaro 32 doubles, 160 hits
C: Jarrod Saltalamacchia .250 AVG, .315 OBP
Ace SP: Jon Lester 22 wins, 230 Ks
Closer: Jonathan Papelbon 35 saves, 2.85 ERA
