Red Sox to host Yankees for the final time during the regular season

By Brian Rabuffetti

The Boston Red Sox took two out of three games against the Oakland Athletics over the weekend. They played all three games in just two days at Fenway Park. On Friday night the Red Sox lost to the A’s, but Boston bounced back and swept the day-night doubleheader on a raining Saturday. The second game was originally scheduled for Sunday, but was moved up a day due to Hurricane Irene’s impending arrival. The hurricane gave the Red Sox an unusual two-day break with the scheduled day off on Monday.

The New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night and headed north for their final regular-season series at Fenway Park. Boston leads the AL East Division by 1.5 games over the Yankees, who have a 7.5 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the Wild Card race. The Red Sox, who have won 10 of 12 games in season series with New York, will host them for the third time this year.

David Ortiz recently recovered from heel bursitis and is swinging a hot bat for the Red Sox. Ortiz is batting .550 with three home runs, seven RBI and 1.771 OPS in five games played last week. Fellow All-Star Adrian Gonzalez has been producing on a similar level and earned the American League Player of the Week Award. Last week Gonzalez went 11-for-28 and powered Boston to a series win in Texas with five home runs at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Recently appointed number two Red Sox starter downs Mets

John Lackey allowed just one run to help the Boston Red Sox
defeat the New York Mets, 8-5. Lackey (2-0)
furthered an impressive spring after being named the second starter in the
rotation this morning. Lackey, who will likely pitch the home opener at Fenway Park,
scattered five hits over five and 1/3 innings to pick up the win and lower his
ERA to 1.73 on the spring. Jed Lowrie and Carl Crawford were the offensive
stars for the Boston,
each going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Drew Sutton hit a two-run homer and Jacoby Ellsbury
continued his hot spring for the Red Sox with a single and run scored. Jonathan
Papelbon was roughed up for four runs on two hits and two walks, retiring only
two batters, before Eammon Portice came in to record the final out and earn his
second save for Boston.

Red Sox fall to Atlanta, 6-1, despite Big Papi’s continued hot spring

Alex Gonzalez and Shawn Bowman each hit solo home runs to
lift the Atlanta Braves over the Red Sox, 6-1, on Wednesday. Gonzalez, a former
Boston
shortstop, led off the second inning with shot to left field and Bowman came in
as a pinch runner in the seventh inning and scored run, before homering in the
eighth. Starting pitcher Tim Hudson yielded a run and a pair of hits over two
innings, but did not factor in the decision for Atlanta, which held the Red Sox to just six
hits. David Ortiz improved his batting average to .625 with three hits,
including a line-drive single to sore Jacoby Ellsbury in the first inning to give
Boston a 1-0
lead. John Lackey yielded four hits and one run over two innings and Kyle
Weiland (0-1) surrendered a run and three hits in two innings to take the loss
for Boston.
