Middlebrooks is back in the lineup

Boston Red Sox prospect Will Middlerooks, who according to a CSNNE interview with GM Ben Cherington will not remain the starting third baseman when Kevin Youkilis returns,  has been dealing with a tight left hamstring since the weekend and left Tuesday’s game in the second inning. He is back in the starting lineup on Wednesday. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ryan Sweeney also rejoin the Red Sox lineup after a couple days off.  Jon Lester will take the mound for the Boston, which has won just one game this month.

Red Sox beat Texas for 80th win, nearly match 1978 mark

By Brian Rabuffetti

Andrew Miller tossed his best game of the season and Adrian Gonzalez provided two home runs to lead the Boston Red Sox to win over the Texas Rangers on Thursday night, 6-0. After losing the first game of the four-game series, the Red Sox took three straight from the Rangers. Boston improved to 80-50 and maintained a one-game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East.

The 130 games by the Red Sox are the franchise’s fourth fewest games played to reach 80 wins and the fewest since 1978. On August 26, 1978, Boston beat the California Angels for their 80th win in their 127th game and moved 7 1/2 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers in the AL East. Only the 1912 and 1946 teams reached the mark faster.

Miller, who has been used out of the bullpen and for spot starts since Erik Bedard was acquired, scattered three hits and two walks, striking out six, over six and 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his sixth win. Miller used 83 pitches, including 51 for strikes, to go deeper than any of his starts this year and notch his first start without allowing a run since he blanked the Baltimore Orioles for five innings on July 20.

Gonzalez hit a solo shot in the first inning and hit a two-run blast in the third to give the Red Sox a four-run lead. Gonzalez has five home runs in the last three games to give him 23 for the season. David Ortiz, who returned from an injury on Wednesday, had a solo home run and Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer to add a couple insurance runs for Boston, which scored 30 runs during its three wins in Texas.

All-Star Ellsbury delivers game-winning hit for Red Sox.

By Brian Rabuffetti
Jacoby Ellsbury recorded the first walk-off hit of his career to lift the Boston Red Sox to a win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday, 3-2. The Red Sox maintained a one game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East and the Indians dropped to three games behind the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central race.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Jason Varitek singled and was pinch ran for by Jarrod Saltalamcchia, who advanced to second on a bloop single by Josh Reddick. Ellsbury lined the 1-0 pitch into center field. He reached first and turned to watch Saltalamacchia slide in home, before Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana could handle the throw and make a tag.

The winning RBI was Ellbury’s 15th since the All-Star break. Ellsbury, who made his first All-Star Game appearance this year, has lead the team in RBI, home runs and runs scored since returning from the break. His 19 post all-star runs scored tops all of baseball and have moved him into second place on the American League leader list. His six home runs lead all outfielders in the league since the break and moved him up to third place on the Red Sox with 17 homers this year.
