Carl Crawford may miss more time in Red Sox outfield
Boston Red Sox outfield problems continued on Thursday. Center fielder Carl Crawford has seen his time in Boston go from bad to worse. He has been on the 15-day disabled list after having wrist surgery in January. Crawford worked out and took batting practice with the team on Fenway Park’s Opening Day and then went toFlorida for extended spring training. Things seemed to be progressing for the 30-year-old to return in May.
This week Crawford flew back to Boston to have his left elbow examined. He had all activities shut down due to a sore elbow and went to see Dr. James Andrews. On Thursday reports came from Nick Cafardo of Boston.com and other media outlets, Dr. Andrews confirmed the team’s diagnosis of an ulnar collateral ligament sprain. A timetable for his return has not been set. The Red Sox are hopefully that he will not need surgery on the elbow, but Crawford may miss three months rehabbing.
Red Sox lineup for April 21
Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine fiddle with the lineup once again, hoping to ignite a spark in his team, which has lost four straight and has only managed eight runs during the losing streak.
Mike Aviles is leading off once again in the absence of Jacoby Ellsbury. Ryan Sweeny is moved up to the number two spot, pushing Dustin Pedroia down to third in the lineup. Adrian Gonzalez is hitting clean up and Cody Ross is back down near the bottom of the order.
Felix Doubront will take the mound and go for his first win of 2012 for the Red Sox. New York Yankees will counter with Freddy Garcia.
Ellsbury DL
Prior to Staurday’s game, the Red Sox GM Ben Cherington announced that Jacoby Ellsbury was placed on the 15 day DL with a right shoulder subluxation.
Ellsbury injury may be severe
The only down moment of the Boston Red Sox 101st Home Opening Day at Fenway Park was an injury to Jacoby Ellsbury, who left the game with right shoulder pain after he slid into second base and the Tampa Bay shortstop Reid Brignac fell on top of him.
An industry source with knowledge of the situation claims Ellsbury may have suffered a dislocated shoulder, according to a WEEI report. If true, Boston’s AL MVP runner-up would likely miss up to 8 weeks.
With Carl Crawford, who worked out and took some batting practice with the team before the home opener, being still at least six weeks away from returning, the Red Sox outfield would consist of Ryan Sweeney, Cody Ross and Darnell McDonald for the next month or two.

Red Sox Nation’s Opening Day Lineup
The Boston Red Sox batting lineup has a few changes from last year’s team, which led the league in runs, hits, doubles, RBI, OPS and total bases. The best offense in baseball is less impressive this year, but they will be a force against opposing pitching staffs and will provide plenty of run support for their pitchers.
1) OF Jacoby Ellsbury: The AL MVP runner up was amazing throughout the year and kept going even through the collapse of September. The All-Star center fielder became the first player in Red Sox history to have a 30-30 season. I don’t expect him to repeat that accomplishment, but 20 home runs with 40 stolen bases and 110 runs scored is not out of the question.
