Jacoby Ellsbury returns with hot spring and start to the regular season

Jacoby
Ellsbury
broke into the majors in a big way during the 2007 playoff run and
World Series win. In 2008 he finished third in rookie of the year voting and he
followed that year by improving in every statistical category in the 2009
season.

In 2010, things went sharply down hill for Ellsbury. He suffered broken ribs
after colliding with Adrian Beltre and didn’t play much after that incident.
His recovery was slow and tensions him and his agent had with the team and
doctors came to light. Whatever the relationship between the two sides, it
looks like that is in the past for now.

At the start of spring games, Ellsbury was given the opportunity to play
center field again this season. This move back to center should help him relax
and give him a boost of confidence.

Manager Terry Francona wants to have Ellsbury return to leading off the
batting order, but some question if Ellsbury is ready for it. Pressure is on
him since he took a beating in the press for his apparent lack of desire to
return from the injury last year. Going into the spring, I wondered if he
needed time to get healthy, get his timing back and play ball without worrying
about the fans and media.

This spring, Ellsbury was the offensive standout for the Red
Sox. He led them in batting with a .355 average and hit three home runs. He
recorded a .950 OPS and stole two bases. For now, he has convinced doubters and
more importantly he convinced Francona. Ellsbury’s performance earned him the
leadoff role to start the regular season.

Ellsbury took his hot spring into the regular season,
notching three hits, including a home run, scoring three times and stealing a
base in the first series of the year.

All early indications point towards Ellsbury returning to
his rookie form and the stolen base competition he will have with Carl Crawford
will be a fun and flashy dimension seldom seen from the Red Sox.

Red Sox lose highly anticipated Opening Day game in Texas

Nelson Cruz and Mike Napoli powered the Texas Rangers over
the Boston Red Sox, 9-5, in their season opener.

Cruz homered in the third inning and singled and scored on a
home run by Napoli, who went 2-for-3 with
three RBI, to give the Rangers a 5-4 advantage in the fourth inning. David
Murphy, Elvis Andrus and Josh Hamilton all doubled to highlight a four-run
eighth inning for the Rangers, who were last season’s American League Champion
and will receive their rings before Saturday’s game.

Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury took his hot spring
into the regular season, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen two
bases. Adrian Gonzalez had two hits and drove in three runs in his Boston debut and David
Ortiz belted a solo home run to tie the game in the eighth inning.

Jon Lester gave up five runs and six hits, including three
home runs, over five and 1/3 innings and Daniel Bard (0-1) surrendered four
runs, retiring just two batters, to take the loss for the Red Sox.

Boston and Texas will play the second game of the three-game
series on Saturday night. The starting pitchers will be John Lackey for the Red
Sox and Colby Lewis for the Rangers.

Red Sox shutout Astros in Houston, 10-0

The Boston Red Sox left City of Palms Park in Ft. Myers
behind and traveled to Houston.
On Wednesday, their last game of Spring Training was held at Minute Maid
Park with 25,755 fans on
hand in the regular-season home of the Houston Astros.

The Red Sox blanked the Astros, 10-0, behind the pitching of
Josh Beckett and the offense of his battery mate, Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Beckett held Houston
hitless until Brett Wallace reached on an infield single, just to the right of Adrian
Gonzalez’s reach. Beckett retired the next batter and Wallace was doubled
off to end the inning to complete Beckett’s outing. He finished the night with
five scoreless innings, striking out three, to pick up his only win of the
spring.

Saltalamacchia, who went 3-for-4, hit a two-run single up
the middle to highlight a five-run first inning and lined a single and scored
in the fourth. Jacoby Ellsbury continued to be Boston’s top performer of the
spring. Ellsbury collected three hits, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.

Gonzalez and Carl Crawford each had a pair of hits and drove
in a run for the Red Sox, who finished the exhibition season with a 14-19
record.

The Red Sox will travel from Houston
to Arlington, TX to face the Texas Rangers on Opening Day,
April 1, 2011.

Recently appointed number two Red Sox starter downs Mets

John Lackey allowed just one run to help the Boston Red Sox
defeat the New York Mets, 8-5. Lackey (2-0)
furthered an impressive spring after being named the second starter in the
rotation this morning. Lackey, who will likely pitch the home opener at Fenway Park,
scattered five hits over five and 1/3 innings to pick up the win and lower his
ERA to 1.73 on the spring. Jed Lowrie and Carl Crawford were the offensive
stars for the Boston,
each going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Drew Sutton hit a two-run homer and Jacoby Ellsbury
continued his hot spring for the Red Sox with a single and run scored. Jonathan
Papelbon was roughed up for four runs on two hits and two walks, retiring only
two batters, before Eammon Portice came in to record the final out and earn his
second save for Boston.
