Middlebrooks moves up to second in the order, Dustin Pedroia will hit cleanup and Jon Lester is on the mound as the Boston Red Sox take on the Baltimore Orioles in the first of a three-game series. The game marks the start of a 20-game stretch without a day off for the Red Sox.

Red Sox lineup for April 21

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine fiddle with the lineup once again, hoping to ignite a spark in his team, which has lost four straight and has only managed eight runs during the losing streak.

Mike Aviles is leading off once again in the absence of Jacoby Ellsbury. Ryan Sweeny is moved up to the number two spot, pushing Dustin Pedroia down to third in the lineup. Adrian Gonzalez is hitting clean up and Cody Ross is back down near the bottom of the order.

Felix Doubront will take the mound and go for his first win of 2012 for the Red Sox. New York Yankees will counter with Freddy Garcia.

Wakefield records 200th career win, downing the Blue Jays

By Brian Rabuffetti

Tim Wakefield recorded his 200th career win on Tuesday night. It was his 186th as a member of the Boston Red Sox. After going 0-3 with five no-decisions over his last eight starts, Wakefield earned the milestone win in the Red Sox victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, 18-6. The knuckleballer allowed five runs and six hits over six innings to pick up the win.

Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia led an offensive attack for Boston with four hits each and a combined eight RBI and eight runs scored. Ellsbury hit a two-run double in the second inning and solo home run in the fourth. Pedroia immediately followed Ellsbury’s homer with one of his own to give the Red Sox a 6-5 advantage in the fourth. Pedroia added a three-run shot in the sixth inning and Jarrod Saltalamacchia lined a three-run double in the eighth for Boston, which scored a season-high 18 runs to snap a five-game losing streak.

Wakefield began his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992. On July 31, 1992 Barry Bonds drove in two runs to help Wakefield claim his first win. The Pirates beat St. Louis, 3-2, at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. Over the course of two seasons, he won 14 games, before being sent to the minors and ultimately released by the Pirates.

Pedroia ‘The Laser Show’ is above Cano

This weekend the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees meet once again to renew their longstanding rivalry. During these battles for dominance, like most Red Sox fans, I can’t help comparing my hometown team to those guys from Bronx, N.Y. I am sure the Yankees fans do the same.
Lately I have been thinking about the second basemen. Would you rather have Robinson Cano or Dustin Pedroia? Although New York may have an advantage over Boston at some positions, this is not one of them.
Cano broke in with the Yankees and finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2005. He was selected to his first All-Star game and improved in almost every statistical category in 2006. Cano’s next two seasons were good, but nothing spectacular compared to the start of his career.
Pedroia played his first full MLB season in 2007. He topped Cano’s rookie campaign and won the AL Rookie of the Year Award. Pedroia improved in his sophomore season and was rewarded with his first of three consecutive All-Star game selections. He won a Silver Slugger Award and was named the 2008 AL MVP.
In 2009, Pedroia had an All-Star season, while Cano was returning to his rookie form. Last season was Cano’s year to become a New York star. He was selected to his second All-Star team, won his first Silver Slugger Award and finished third in the 2010 AL MVP voting.
