Dice-K expected to undergo season-ending surgery

By Brian Rabuffetti

According to multiple sources, including ESPN and Boston.com, Daisuke Matsuzaka is expected to have ligament reconstruction surgery. The Tommy John procedure will end Matsuzaka’s season and he may not return until some time during the 2012 season.

Matsuzaka went home to Japan to be with family members before meeting with Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Dr. Yocum confirmed the Red Sox doctor’s diagnosis of a torn ulnar collateral ligament in the right elbow.

Matsuzaka, who has been on the disabled list since May 18, could attempt a rehabilitation program, but if it failed and the surgery was then needed, valuable recovery time would have been wasted.

Red Sox should send Dice-K to the minors

This season will go a long way in deciding if Daisuke Matsuzaka fits in the Boston Red Sox
future plans. For many in Red Sox nation, this year will ultimately
prove if his costly signing was a success or failure and so far it is
not looking good. Many fans are already suggesting a move be made and I
completely agree.

Last year Matsuzaka continued to
range from good to bad on any night. Throughout his MLB career, Dice-K
has been at his worst by trying to be too perfect and paint the
corners. Instead of frustrating hitters, he gets frustrated by the
umpires and loses his ability to record outs.

Matsuzaka,
who increased his 2011 ERA to 12.86 on Monday, seems to have developed
a new way to be utterly ineffective. He has left too many pitches over
the heart of the plate for hitters.

Red Sox rally falls short against Tampa Bay, after another bad outing from Dice-K

Johnny Damon doubled and scored twice and Robinson Chirinos
hit a walk-off home run to lift the Tampa Bay Rays over the Boston Red Sox, 8-6.
Damon walked and scored in the first inning and hit an RBI double and scored
again in the third as the Rays jumped out to a five run lead against Daisuke
Matsuzaka and the Red Sox. Chirinos took a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall
for a two-run game-winner with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Tampa Bay
starter Andy Sonnastine allowed just two hits over four innings and did not
factor in the decision. Nate Spears had his second good performance of the week, recording three hits and two RBI for Boston.
Oscar Tejeda and Drew Sutton rallied to tie the game for the Red Sox with back-to-back
homers in the ninth inning and Yamaico Navarro, who is batting .333, pinch-ran
and scored a run. Matsuzaka, who raised his ERA to 11.42 in three games,
surrendered five runs, five hits and two walks over three and 2/3 innings. Alfredo
Aceves (0-1) gave up three runs and four hits in two and 1/3 innings to take

Dice-K has a rough outing against the Marlins and Iglesias ties up the O’s

Gaby Sanchez led the Florida Marlins in an offensive attack
against Daisuke Matsuzaka, beating the Boston Red Sox, 11-2. Sanchez belted a
two-run double in first inning, walked and scored his second run on a Matt
Dominguez double in the third and lined an RBI single in the sixth inning to
stake the Marlins to a 7-0 lead. Dewayne Wise collected three hits, including a
two-run homer in the second inning for Florida.
Anibal Sanchez (2-0), who the Marlins received from the Red Sox in the Josh
Beckett trade, held Boston
to just one hit over three innings to pick up the win. Matsuzaka (0-1) gave up
seven runs, five earned, on six hits and a pair of walks over three innings to
suffer the loss in his second start of the spring. Darnell McDonald doubled
home Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the sixth inning and Yamaico Navarro hit a solo
home run in the seventh for the Red Sox.

While Matsuzaka was having difficulties in Fort
Myers, the second Boston
squad traveled to face the Baltimore Orioles. The two teams played 10 innings,
before calling it a 4-4 tie. Jose Iglesias and Oscar Tejeda each had three hits
to provide the offense for the Red Sox. Iglesias singled to score Drew Sutton
and Tejeda legged out a two-run triple to give Boston a 3-0 advantage in the second inning. Iglesias
hit a ninth-inning single and two batters later Tejeda drove him home with a
single to right field. Alfredo Aceves went three innings, allowing a run and two
hits, and Dennys Reyes retired all three batters he faced for the Red Sox.
Vladimir Guerrero went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs and Jake Fox hit a game-tying
solo home run in the ninth inning for Baltimore.
