David Ortiz gets Player of the Week honor and is 1st in DH All-Star voting

By Brian Rabuffetti

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was named the America League Player of the Week for the week ending June 5. This is Ortiz’s fifth career weekly honor and he is the third Red Sox player in the past month to receive the award, along with Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford.

During last week’s six-game homestand, Ortiz went 12-for-22 with two home runs, six RBI and five runs scored. Ortiz, who was a bright spot during three losses to the Chicago White Sox and helped the Red Sox turn things around to sweep the Oakland Athletics, notched 22 total bases during the week. His .545 batting average was second in the league along with a 1.00 SLG and a .583 OBP.

Ortiz had his best April in recent years and topped it with a stellar May performance, which may propel him to his fifth fan selection as an All-Star starter. The six-time All-Star reached 1,160,590 votes to pass Michael Young (1,033,514 votes) of the Texas Rangers with the most votes for the designated hitter All-Star spot as of June 7. Ortiz finished the month of May with a .342 average and an OPS of 1.036 with 10 home runs and 16 RBI.
